The Blue Ridge Mountains will be the back drop for the 2018 SSA Convention this year as we meet in one of the most popular destination cities in America, Asheville, North Carolina. We'll be staying at the Crowne Plaza Resort located just two short miles from the heart of downtown Asheville. There is so much to do in this beautiful town, sometimes referred to as "the Paris of the South", you may want to arrive early and stay late.
First, there are the Blue Ridge Mountains themselves. Drive or hike through the Pisgah National forest to enjoy old-growth hardwood forests, the highest mountain peaks east of the Mississippi, whitewater rivers and beautiful waterfalls. Take your camera. Take your time. You won’t regret it.
Then, there’s the town of Asheville itself, with over 200 locally-owned stores and boutiques and over 100 restaurants. In addition to all of the shopping, this city is sometimes referred to as “The Paris of the South” for the concentration of fine art and folk culture you’ll find there. We've scheduled two days worth of group tours if you want to experience the city. (See Asheville Trolley Tour.) But if you want to go off on your own, there's plenty to do.
If it’s adventure you’re after, you’ll find biking, birding, wildlife tours, camping, fishing, gardens, golf and tennis, hiking trails, horseback riding, spectator sports, water sports and even ziplines.
One of the biggest attractions in Asheville is the Biltmore Estate. Built by George Vanderbilt, it contains the largest house in America. (No kidding, you’ve stayed in hotels that were smaller.) It also features gardens you’ll have to see to believe, shops, restaurants, a winery, historic farm and so much more. We’ll tour it together on Friday.
